Alaf in Galilean orthography (and in most other dialects) always represents some form of "a" unless it is combined in several ways with Waw or Yod. We'll be learning about those in the Waw and Yod lessons. :-)
Western Syriac, Western Neo-Syriac, and a few isolated examples in Old Aramaic are exceptions to this rule that jump to mind.
